Root, Shoot, and Fruit

... you're here to thrive!

You know what reactivity feels like—heart racing, emotions swirling, quickly agitated, easily flustered, teetering on the edge of burnout. As highly sensitive, empathic souls, we feel the world deeply. But what if these discomforts are not what we've made them out to be? What if they are glimmers of light on a divine spectrum guiding us to survive so that we root, shoot and fruit? According to some, life is light, and every action—even those we judge—is an attempt to find safety. By recognizing self-preservation as necessary and moving beyond symptom relief, we now embrace a Consciousness-based path to healing, sharing our light freely.

Self-Preservation: Surviving, Not Thriving

We often call behaviors “self-serving,” but they’re really self-preservation—our brain’s way of seeking safety. Neuroscience shows the reward center drives an “appetitive state,” pushing us toward life-supporting actions, whether substances, attention, or control. These aren’t flaws; they’re survival.

Throughout most of my life, including adulthood, various people didn't miss a beat at calling me selfish. Looking back, I'm delighted by the honesty. At the time, it hurt. Today, I tell clients all the time, 'if it stings, there's a message'. It took "living" through these moments and learning to comfort myself to see this light. Perhaps, this is where the saying "see the light" comes from. It's not just a polite metaphor.

To call someone selfish or suggest that about yourself, may seem unkind or harsh, yet there is some degree of truth in everything a person says to you. Disregard the messenger and the delivery. Just consider the words and how they affected you.

Selfish is a distinct way of saying "self-serving" which is the intention of the life force--to preserve itself. Regardless of how much you think you are in control, reactions are the essence of life attempting to protect itself and the sooner we recognize this within ourselves, the faster we will see this in the people around us. Right down to people manipulating situations and others with emotions. See this and you're shining the light of compassion and understanding.

The Spectrum of Light

Kabbalah teaches that all existence is light—a spectrum woven by Consciousness, or the Creator. Addiction, habitual behaviors, fear, emotional drama, and even rigid rules throughout the multitude of belief systems are protective instincts within this weave. When we focus on symptom relief, we are in survival mode, with reactions to stressors, including medications, which the brain interprets as threats. This becomes a trap, fueling emotional volatility and a sense of feeling “stuck.”

The best way to get 'unstuck' is to do something. Movement of any kind disrupts the "habit" of thinking your way out of something. Suddenly an idea comes to mind without effort. This is one way using an essential oil helps. They help move the brain from being "stuck" in logic and support the connection to "right brain" holistic processing (taking everything into account)

Your sensitivity is a gift, tuned to this spectrum. By shining awareness on self-preservation, you can now choose how to respond, engaged with the light of life instead of attempting to control it.

Skin as a Communicator

Your skin isn’t just a barrier—it’s a communication system, with receptors that collect information from the outer world for your nervous system to translate. It also emits stress hormones, medication metabolites, and emotional signals that affect you and others. In a toxic world, synthetic chemicals overwhelm this dialogue, keeping your autonomic nervous system (ANS) on "high alert" and in fight-or-flight.

My “full body deodorant,” an essential oil blend, helps. These plant compounds support the brain's interpretation and response. Applied topically, they assist with mediating the overwhelming noise affecting your system 24/7. This isn’t about blocking signals—it’s about thriving amidst them.

From Symptom Relief to Consciousness

Medications have their place, but focusing only on symptom relief is static, like trying to control nature. Nature must survive so that it can thrive—our bodies are of nature. Integrating essential oils with a Consciousness-based mindset shifts you from existing to living. These oils influence cellular activity, aiding in the production of the chemistry needed for ease, so that the "scent" you're putting off into the world is conducive to better interactions.

This is particularly important given the long-term study that examined relationships between solar and magnetic factors and the time course and lags of autonomic nervous system responses to changes in solar and geomagnetic activity. These investigations reveal the impact the environment has on us and without attention to and supporting autonomic nervous system activity, we are unknowingly contributing to emotional volatility.

As an adult child of an alcoholic and “wound care” specialist, healing hearts and dispelling emotional reactivity is how we give to the world. My journey with my mom taught me that survival shapes us, but Consciousness guides us to grow. Root, shoot and fruit. The wounds of your past are part of your light, woven by the Creator for evolution.
